The Rhodesian Services Association Inc was formed in New Zealand from a basis of people who served, or whose family served, in forces loyal to Rhodesia. The aims are to retain record of our history; remember the fallen; honor the brave and to offer moral support and help to former comrades and their families. The Association provides a focal point for those wishing to make contact with others from all branches of the forces, as well as the nurses, whose contribution has gone largely unrecognized. Our monthly publication, Contact! Contact! and items of interest are sent out by e-mail.
We have been made welcome and supported by New Zealand, in particular by the Hobsonville Returned Services Association in Auckland and the 6th Battalion (Hauraki) Regimental Assn Inc. and the Classic Flyers Museum in Tauranga.
On an annual basis we take part in the ANZAC Day parade at Hobsonville. We are encouraged by our hosts to march as a squad and fly the Rhodesian flag. We lay a wreath in memory of Rhodesians and then (again with the encouragement of our hosts) have a separate service of our own, dedicated to all Rhodesians and those who served Rhodesia.
In Tauranga, an annual reunion which is known as the October RV takes place at Labour Weekend with the support of the 6th Battalion (Hauraki) Regimental Assn Inc. The first RV in 2002 was envisaged to be a one off affair in order to acknowledge those who had been decorated for their bravery and service to Rhodesia. The Commanding Officer of the 6th Battalion (Hauraki) Group was most complimentary of our efforts and the kind of spirit that we represented and insisted that as soldiers, we should have the opportunity to be able to keep safe the record of our country and invited us to form a museum display as part of the unit's history room. This has been done with funding and contribution from all over the world. The display was officially opened in April 2003 during a visit to by Lt. Gen. Peter Walls. Anyone is welcoming to attend the RV, irrespective of nationality or service to Rhodesia. The Hauraki Museum and Garrison Club are open to the public every Friday from 16.30 hrs.
In 2006 the Classic Flyers Museum invited us to form a display in their museum on Jean Batten Drive, Mount Maunganui. This has been done, again with input from all over the world. Additionally we have been able to purchase and convert a refrigerated container in which to store our growing collection of artifacts that cannot yet be displayed. This container, known as The Lion's Den, has been installed adjacent to the Classic Flyer's Museum. Access is by appointment. Classic Flyer's Museum www.classicflyersnz.com is open daily from 9am - 4pm together with the Avgas Café.
At the inaugural AGM in October 2003 a committee was elected. The name Rhodesian Services Association and symbol of the Lion & Tusk was adopted signifying the representation of all arms of the forces through out the history of Rhodesia.
